So luckily I was found by BANKS’ team who introduced me to her music. I picked a song that I felt I could really play with as far as moves/musicality goes. What I like about this track is the chill vibe. That’s why I chose to make a chill dance..not doing too much or too less, just right with the sounds I hear in the music. With BANKS singing, I really wanted a girl character to play this role so I picked a student of mine, Drew Gorospe. The thing about her is her dancing has a specific style. Her style consists of smooth hits and very well controlled movement and I pictured her style doing the dance the whole entire time of making it! The cool thing, is I kinda wanted to highlight her strengths and style, meaning I didn’t necessarily want it super clean. I wanted it to look like it was HER dancing. As you could see in the beginning and end, she’s dancing the same dance in her way for me, and I’m doing the same in my way for her to really show personality with movement.
What I get from the song was a coffee shop scene where two strangers sat in eachother’s direction, just enough to get a few peeks at one another. Specifically the girl, would thinks of this man that she does not know only by attraction and imagining the two of them together. Now it’s obviously difficult and unrealistic to go up to this person you think is hot/cute/etc. and say, “umm hey, I don’t know you and you don’t know me, but I find you very attractive. Why don’t I take you out sometime, get to know eachother? Here’s my facebook..” That situation is rather fairy tale. Sure there may be ballsy people to do such things, but most likely with this happening, the person to approach the stranger would look like a creep haha. So Drew/Me getting up and dancing symbolizes our thoughts of the other person and wanting to get to know them, but it just isn’t happening. Basically whatever I got from hearing the lyrics of the song. Now she specifically talks about being different worlds apart, SO I was like what if I had it 2-sided! Like there is the normal world where Drew is dancing for me…..BUT little does her or anyone know, there is such thing as “parallel universes” where roles are actually switched. There for you have the split screens, same things happening, different people/outfits.
Imaging the coffee shop thing..the person you think is very beautiful or handsome..you’re just gonna sit there, admire them, but realize nothing will happen because you won’t say anything to her because you guys don’t know each other. May never ever see each other ever again lol. WELL, it’s possible that other person is thinking the same exact thing! Some luck right? Now that type of situation is real lol. Well when the clips combine to where we are both actually dancing together..it is the 2 worlds colliding, notice our clothes are combines with our solos, and our clones in the parrell universe. It represents both of our thoughts thinking the same thing without even knowing it, then the end is back to reality.
Now considering I do all of my videos myself and I don’t have a production team or anything like that, it’s rather hard to make all of my visions come out exactly like I would want them to or see them in my head. BUT I mean with me doing the work by myself along with filming, editing, ideas, directing..I’m pretty okay with this video. I could only imagine where my brain could take me if I had the professional help. It is just really hard to dance it and film yourself doing the dance. Actually it’s impossible, especially to get the shots looking like how I want them to be shot. I would like to thank my little brother though for putting up with my directing, I could be picky, but he puts up with it and tries his best to match it. Thanks again Drew for learning it in such a short amount of time.
Thank you to BANKS and her team for finding me, sharing my video right away. Looking forward to more of her music and refreshing sound.
Also thanks to Freedom Dance Center located in Tacoma, Washington for always housing all of my videos. Not really anywhere new to film in that place considering this is the lobby and the other room is the studio with red walls, BUT it isn’t always about the location and production..sometimes it’s just about the dance itself and representing what the music tells your brain to do by moving your body.
Thanks for anyone keeping up with my work, I know these videos are more for myself to see my progression as a choreographer and for fun/expression..but it’s always an honor knowing there are some people that feel and understand my work. Definitely something that keeps me going.
Well, that was my tumblr post…kinda love this thing because I feel like every post I could just ramble and be myself. Just with I posted more..hopefully the next video! Which will be interesting considering the next thing I plan on releasing is a hard hitting/hype piece. Been awhile since I released one of those. Last time was “Wish” and “Bad Bitches” lol.
